Olivia Nuzzi, a prominent political journalist, has been appointed as the new West Coast Editor for Vanity Fair, marking a significant new chapter in her career less than a year after her departure from New York magazine. The move, announced on Thursday, September 18, 2025, is part of a broader strategic reshuffling at the iconic publication under its new global editorial director, Mark Guiducci.
A New Editorial Direction on the West Coast
In her role as West Coast Editor, Nuzzi will oversee editing responsibilities across various platforms and subject areas, with a particular focus on the events, industries, and culture emanating from the Pacific region. This expansion into a dedicated West Coast editorial role signifies Vanity Fair’s intent to deepen its coverage of a critical cultural and economic hub. Nuzzi will also contribute her own writing to the magazine, leveraging her well-regarded journalistic voice.
Her appointment comes as part of a substantial influx of 12 new staffers and a strategic realignment designed to unify the magazine’s global editorial identity. This hiring spree reflects Guiducci’s vision for Vanity Fair, aiming to foster a team characterized by “fearlessness—people with a point of view, able to express it in both substance and style,” as he stated in an announcement regarding the new hires.
The Path to Vanity Fair: A Controversial Departure
Nuzzi’s transition to Vanity Fair follows a turbulent period that led to her exit from New York magazine. In September 2024, she was placed on leave after disclosing a “personal relationship” with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. while reporting on his independent presidential campaign. The magazine cited this as a violation of its standards regarding conflicts of interest and disclosure. Nuzzi acknowledged the relationship but maintained it was never physical, though she conceded it should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of impropriety.
Following the disclosure, New York magazine conducted an internal review, later supplemented by a third-party investigation, which concluded that Nuzzi’s published work showed “no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias”. Despite these findings, Nuzzi and New York magazine mutually agreed to part ways in October 2024, concluding her nearly eight-year tenure as the magazine’s Washington correspondent. The controversy also spilled into a public dispute with her then-fiancé, Ryan Lizza.
Vanity Fair’s Strategic Reshaping Under Guiducci
The hiring of Nuzzi is a key component of global editorial director Mark Guiducci’s ambitious plan to reshape Vanity Fair’s editorial strategy. Since taking the helm in June 2025, Guiducci has initiated a significant overhaul, including the phasing out of distinct verticals like “The Hive” and “Hollywood Daily”. The objective is to move away from siloed content and toward a more unified, integrated approach that treats every story as a core “Vanity Fair story”.
The magazine is now focusing more intently on its coverage of entertainment, culture, money, politics, and style, while scaling back on news aggregation and trade reporting. This strategic pivot involves creating new roles, including a global creative director, senior editors, producers, and dedicated correspondents for key beats such as Hollywood and Washington, alongside a completely new social media team.
A Proven Track Record
Before her tenure at New York magazine, where she was known for her incisive political profiles and coverage of presidential campaigns, Nuzzi began her career as a writer for The Daily Beast, covering the 2016 Donald Trump campaign. Her appointment at Vanity Fair signals a return to high-profile journalism within a revamped editorial landscape, where her expertise in political and cultural news is expected to contribute significantly to the magazine’s West Coast editorial output.
As Vanity Fair embarks on this new editorial phase, Nuzzi’s arrival as West Coast Editor marks a notable development, blending her established journalistic acumen with the magazine’s evolving vision for comprehensive storytelling.
