Weather Disrupts Travel: Wet Roads on West Coast, Flight Cancellations in Gander

Across the Island, a weather system is bringing wet conditions to the west coast, creating challenges for drivers and impacting travel schedules. The rain, which began affecting the western regions, is expected to move eastward, impacting central areas later this morning. Meanwhile, residents and travelers in other parts of the province are experiencing drier conditions.

Road Conditions Vary Across the Province

Roads on the Avalon Peninsula and the south coast remain dry, offering a respite from the precipitation experienced further west. In Labrador, road conditions are also reported to be dry, providing clear passage for motorists. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, especially as the rain moves into central areas. Visibility may be reduced, and the potential for hydroplaning increases on wet surfaces. Drive according to the prevailing weather conditions and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

Foggy Conditions and Marine Traffic

Areas of fog are present in the Burgeo area, reducing visibility for drivers. Similar conditions exist in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, where fog is also reported. These conditions can be hazardous, and drivers are encouraged to use their headlights and drive cautiously.

Marine traffic is also affected by the weather. The MV Qajaq W is currently in service, however, is off schedule, possibly due to the inclement weather. Passengers should check with the ferry operator for the most up-to-date information regarding departure and arrival times, as well as any potential delays or cancellations.

Air Travel Affected in Gander

Air travel is facing disruptions, with some flights already impacted by the weather. Air Canada flights 1170 and 1171, scheduled to arrive and depart from Gander, have been aborted due to the weather conditions. Passengers are advised to contact Air Canada or consult flight tracking websites for the latest updates on their travel plans.

Flights on Schedule in Other Locations

While Gander experiences flight cancellations, air travel in other parts of the province remains unaffected. Flights in St. John’s and Deer Lake are currently operating on time. Passengers traveling through these airports should proceed as scheduled, although it is always advisable to check with their airline for any last-minute changes.
