San Francisco commuters and visitors face a complex week of transit and traffic challenges from Thursday, June 26, through Wednesday, July 2, 2025, as the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) issues a comprehensive advisory detailing impacts from major sporting events and extensive infrastructure work.
Multiple street closures, Muni reroutes, and parking restrictions are anticipated across the city, particularly affecting areas around the Oracle Park ballpark, the Chase Center, and the Civic Center district.
Key Traffic Impacts: Giants Game
Transit and traffic flow near the ballpark will be significantly altered on Thursday, June 26, due to a San Francisco Giants game against the Miami Marlins scheduled for 12:45 p.m. Anticipate increased congestion and parking difficulties in the vicinity.
Specific street closures related to the game include the eastbound lanes of King Street between 3rd and 2nd streets. This segment will be closed approximately two and a half hours before the first pitch. It is scheduled to reopen after the game begins but will close again from the seventh inning until post-game traffic has subsided. This intermittent closure requires drivers navigating the area to remain aware of changing conditions throughout the afternoon.
Furthermore, the northbound portion of the 4th Street Bridge, also known as the Peter R. Maloney Bridge, will be restricted during the post-game period. Only Muni vehicles, taxis, and bicycles will be permitted access, diverting general traffic to alternative routes. Designated taxi stands will be operational to facilitate rideshare and taxi services, located on 2nd Street (west side between Brannan and King; east side between Townsend and King) and 3rd Street (west side, north of King).
Special event parking rates will be enforced in areas surrounding the ballpark, potentially impacting parking availability and cost for attendees and nearby residents or workers.
Extensive Closures Near Civic Center
Several key streets within the Civic Center area are subject to extended closures, impacting access and movement through this central part of the city for nearly a week. Grove Street between Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place and Larkin Street, and Fulton Street between Hyde and Larkin streets are closed from Tuesday, June 24, continuing through Tuesday, July 1.
Additional closures in the vicinity include Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place between Grove and McAllister streets and Larkin Street between McAllister and Market streets. These segments are also closed during the same June 24 to July 1 period, significantly limiting vehicular traffic flow through the Civic Center.
Adding to the complexity, westbound lanes of Grove Street between Larkin and Hyde streets face a full-day closure on Thursday, June 26.
Access to the Civic Center Garage will also be impacted over the weekend, with restricted entry and exit between 8 p.m. on Friday, June 27, and 6 a.m. on Monday, June 30. Those planning to use the garage during this timeframe should make alternative parking arrangements.
Muni Service Adjustments
These extensive street closures necessitate significant rerouting for several Muni bus lines. Two routes, the 6 Hayes-Parnassus and the 19 Polk, will be re-routed from 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, until 6 a.m. on Monday, June 30.
Additional Muni routes will experience reroutes starting slightly later, from 8 p.m. on Friday, June 27, until 6 a.m. on Monday, June 30. These include the 5 Fulton, 5R Fulton Rapid, and 27 Bryant lines. Passengers utilizing these routes during the specified periods should consult the SFMTA website or transit apps for detailed information on temporary stops and route paths.
Chase Center Events and Associated Traffic
Events at the Chase Center are also expected to contribute to localized traffic impacts. The Golden State Valkyries are scheduled to play two games during the advisory period: against the Chicago Sky on Friday, June 27, at 7 p.m., and against the Seattle Storm on Sunday, June 29, at 5:30 p.m. Increased pedestrian and vehicular traffic should be anticipated around the venue before and after these events.
Parade Formation Area Disruptions
Preparation for potential parade activities will also affect downtown streets starting early in the week. Street closures designated for parade formation areas, encompassing parts of Market, Steuart, Spear, Main, and Beale streets, will commence at 6 a.m. on Thursday, June 26. Cross-street traffic in these affected areas will be subject to delays throughout the duration of the closures.
Planning Your Journey
Given the confluence of these events and construction activities, the SFMTA strongly advises anyone traveling within San Francisco between June 26 and July 2, 2025, to plan their journeys in advance. Checking real-time transit updates and traffic conditions is highly recommended. Allowing for extra travel time and considering alternative transportation options, such as walking, biking, or adjusting travel times, will be crucial to navigating the city effectively during this period of significant disruption.
The agency emphasizes that the detailed advisory [19] provides the most current information available and encourages the public to remain informed as conditions may change.
